Liverpool hero Dietmar Hamann believes Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal does want to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels this summer, reports Goal.com.
Hamann, who starred on the international scene for Germany throughout his playing days, believes it's time for Hummels to move on after a lengthy stint at Dortmund.
In fact, the ex-Liverpool and City midfielder has insisted that the commanding World Cup-winning centre-back is in need of a new challenge, with a number of clubs interested in the player's signature.

"He is interesting to many clubs. Hummels has had some great performances at BVB but a transfer makes sense for both sides," he said on German TV show Sky90.
"He has done everything with Dortmund. He is at a point where he needs a new challenge. Van Gaal wants him and United need someone who can build up their game.

"His era has come to an end. He has not played as well this year but he is still very successful. For both parties, it would be best if Hummels changes club this summer."
Hummels has certainly failed to prove his credentials on a consistent basis in the Bundesliga this term, so perhaps a move away from the club would be the best thing for the player as he reaches the prime of his career.
And there's no doubt about, there has been a vulnerability in United's back-line at times under the Van Gaal regime this term, so it's not entirely surprising that the club continue to be linked with a move for the Dortmund man.
Ultimately signing Hummels would give the Red Devils a leading figure at the heart of their defence - something they have clearly missed since the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
At one stage this season, fans would have been begging for a clear out at the heart of the club's defence, but the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo have stepped up in recent time.
There's no doubt about it, Smalling and Jones have endured a tricky time at the Theatre of Dreams over the last few years, however they finally appear to be settling down and producing consistent displays under Van Gaal.
Perhaps, then, Hummels would add some vital experience to the club's defence, but the likes of Smalling and Jones deserve the opportunity to show they can play alongside him.
