Liverpool are considering an attempt to sign Geoffrey Kondogbia this summer after the AS Monaco midfielder impressed Anfield scouts with recent performances both domestically and in Europe.
The Daily Mail reports that Reds representatives are keeping a close eye on the France international as Brendan Rodgers weighs up a bid to bring the player to Merseyside when the transfer window reopens at the end of the season.
Kondogbia is a box-to-box star in the same kind of mould as soon to be departing Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, and could be brought in as a direct replacement for the inspirational skipper after he leaves the club to pursue a new challenge in the United States with Major League Soccer franchise Los Angeles Galaxy.
The 22-year-old only arrived at Stade Louis II last summer after joining the wealthy Ligue 1 club from Spanish side Sevilla in a £17 million deal.
His switch to the Principality came as a bit of a surprise given the huge level of interest that Kondogbia was attracting from a number of other European heavyweights like Real Madrid, Juventus, Manchester United and French rivals Paris Saint-Germain.
Louis van Gaal had wanted to bring the talented Frenchman to Old Trafford as part of his overhaul of the Red Devils' midfield prior to the start of the current campaign, but failed to convince the player that his future would be best served at the Theatre of Dreams.
Kondogbia could be about to finally make a move to the Premier League, though, with Liverpool giving serious thought to securing his signature following positive feedback from several senior scouts.
He played an instrumental role in Monaco's surprise Champions League last 16 victory over Arsenal and has gone from strength to strength over the 23 appearances he's made for Leonardo Jardim's side this term.
However, Rodgers will be well aware of the need to qualify for Europe's elite club competition next season if he's going to convince Kondogbia to leave his homeland in favour of a new adventure in England's top-flight.
