To say that AJ Lee’s decision to retire from the WWE was a shock for fans is an understatement. The whole of the WWE Universe has been left reeling after the divas legend’s decision to quit the company, and many fans have plenty of questions regarding her somewhat acrimonious exit.
Though it has been rumored for months that AJ Lee has not been enjoying her time in WWE of late, the idea of her simply retiring had not even been speculated.
Many fans have questioned whether WWE knew of her impending retirement, but according to reports from wrestlinginc.com on Tuesday, that certainly was not the case.
WWE had no idea
Had WWE known that she was on her way out, it is likely that the wrestling company would have decided to give her an unfavorable outcome at WrestleMania 31 at Levi Stadium last month. Furthermore, wrestlinginc.com believes that is one of the reasons why AJ did not tell WWE about her plans.
“We noted before that AJ Lee likely knew she was going to retire from WWE going into the WrestleMania 31 match with Paige against The Bella Twins,” wrestlinginc.com reported.
“It's believed that AJ didn't inform WWE officials of her retirement until after the WrestleMania match was over because they probably would have had her lose if they knew she was retiring so soon.”
AJ Lee had only just returned
AJ Lee was out of action for three months earlier this year due to a legitimate neck injury, before she then returned to aid Paige on after she was being attacked. The two former rivals then allied for a match against The Bella Twins at WrestleMania 31, which AJ Lee and Paige won.
It is likely that WWE would have made The Bella Twins win that match against Paige and AJ Lee, had they already known that AJ Lee was going to retire. And it Vince McMahon is no doubt angry that AJ Lee failed to tell them she was going to quit.
As all WWE fans know, AJ Lee is married to former WWE star CM Punk, and since his decision to leave the company last January and join UFC at the back end of last year, AJ has been subjected to a fair amount of abuse. Even though that abuse had come to an end somewhat, it is likely that she wanted to get a fresh start and it will be interesting to see what the 28-year-old does next in her career.
