Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera wants to stay at Old Trafford for the long term despite interest from La Liga giants Barcelona.

This has been reported by the Daily Mail, who have revealed that the Catalan giants are watching the United midfielder as a potential replacement for Spanish ace Xavi.

Recent form

Herrera, who moved to the Theatre of Dreams from La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao last summer, has been in marvelous form for the Red Devils of late.

In fact, this past weekend, as Van Gaal's side secured a crucial 3-1 victory over Aston Villa in the Premier League, Herrera was at the double, as he took his goal tally in England's elite division up to seven for the season.

It certainly appears that his recent form hasn't gone unrecognised, with Spanish giants Barcelona seemingly keeping tabs on his performances in the famous red shirt.

Barcelona, of course, are currently in the middle of a transfer ban, meaning they won't be able to add to their squad until 2016, but it appears that they're currently on the lookout to replace veteran midfielder Xavi, who looks set to leave the Nou Camp behind in the near future.

United fans, though, will no doubt be overjoyed by the news that Herrera is planning a long stay with the club, as they go in search of sustained success under the Louis van Gaal regime.

Class of Herrera

At 25-years-old, Herrera really does have a long term future ahead of him on English soil, so would be right to commit himself to United.

At the end of the day, despite some early troubles, the tricky Spaniard is now a key man under Van Gaal, and will only go from strength-to-strength under the Dutchman.

It's certainly not surprising that Manchester United fans have quickly fallen in love with him as he's an exceptional footballer who can provide in terms of goals and assists.

Ultimately Herrera now looks set for a successful spell at Old Trafford, and not even Barcelona will be able to stop that from happening.
