Chris Copeland of the Indiana Pacers and his wife were rushed to Bellevue Hospital early Wednesday morning after being stabbed outside of a New York City nightclub.
This sad story takes a twist however as it was also revealed that two players of the Atlanta Hawks were arrested at the scene of the crime for obstructing governmental administration.
According to reports, Copeland was having an argument outside of the popular 1 OAK club in NYC, he was stabbed in the abdomen while his wife was slashed in the arms and legs during the skirmish. This all took place on Wednesday, just before 4 a.m.
When the police came to the scene, two members of the Hawks, Thabo Sefolosha and Pero Antic were arrested for trying to prevent the police to set up a crime scene, the sources say. They were in New York for a game against the Brooklyn Nets that will take place Wednesday night.
According to the New York Daily News, the man that stabbed Copeland and his wife was arrested when the police came to the scene. Shezoy Bleary, a 22 year old, pulled out the knife and stabbed Copeland and his wife. Charges are currently pending.
Chris Copeland and his wife Katrine are thankfully in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital. Copeland and the Pacers were in town to take on the New York Knicks Wednesday night.
Pacers' President of Basketball Operations, Larry Bird released a statement on the team's website following the events that took place,
"We are aware that Chris Copeland was injured early this morning in New York City. We are still gathering information and will update when we know more. Our thoughts are with Chris and those injured.”
Copeland, a former New York Knick will hopefully return to action soon as the Pacers will need his help to make the final push for the playoffs.
