Let's take a step back in time to last year's WrestleMania. Bryan had defeated Triple H earlier in the night to be added into the main event for the WWE Championship against Randy Orton and Batista.
Bryan was the fan favorite going into both matches and much to everyone's surprise, he won both matches and became the brand new WWE Champion, but it wasn't to last.
Bryan being the WWE Champion isn't something new, in fact this was his third reign as champ, but just like the others, he was completely screwed out of the title and the main event picture. The difference between this reign and the others, Bryan had two major, real life setbacks that caused him to be unable to fulfill his duties as WWE Champion and the face of the company.
Those setbacks, you ask?

Bryan had suffered a severe neck injury and shortly after that, his father died. Now it's completely understandable for the company to strip him of the title, but the way it was done was in poor taste.
Ever since Bryan came back from his injury, he was been over with the fans more than ever. While Bryan was away from the action, the crowds in the arenas were a wave of "YES Movement" signs and the "YES!" chants were deafening. It became even bigger when he finally made his return.

His fans have been lobbying for the company to put the WWE Championship title back on Bryan, but much to their dismay, the company doesn't seem to care what the fans want.
Now we're back in the present day, it's been a week since WrestleMania 31, and the brand new Intercontinental Champion is Daniel Bryan. Now some may see this as a major set back to the former main eventer, but actually this isn't a set back at all.
For the past few years, the Intercontinental Championship hasn't be a real relevant title, while at one point in time, it was just as prestigious as the World Heavyweight Championship.
The Intercontinental Championship was a title for the mid to high card guys, when someone became the Intercontinental Champion, it really showed that they had worked hard to prove that they were a major player within the company. But that has not been the case for the past few years.
Legitimacy is key to the belt
The WWE has been throwing the Intercontinental Championship around to different people and the fans are not impressed with the wrestlers that have been the Champion in those years.
Bryan as the Intercontinental Champion is a great thing, it brings legitimacy back to the title and puts Bryan back in the main event picture, which proves to the fans that the company does care about what they want.
This gives the WWE a chance to build back up the Intercontinental Championship, while giving Bryan the major push that he deserves. So when he does gain the WWE Championship, for the fourth time, it will be more special that just thrusting him back to the top.
I do believe that we are the cusp of something major with Daniel Bryan. While we are all very impatient to have a WWE Champion that we want to see every week, please have patience.
We might have to sit through guys like Seth Rollins or Randy Orton, but it will be all the more sweeter when Bryan defeats them and becomes the Champ once more.
