Tottenham Hotspur are considering a surprise summer move for Tom Cleverley, the Manchester United midfielder - currently on loan at Aston Villa - who will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season.
According to the Daily Mirror, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is a keen admirer of the 25-year-old, and is ready to offer him the opportunity to continue rebuilding his reputation at White Hart Lane.
Cleverley's Red Devils career is almost certainly over after being allowed to leave Old Trafford for the final 12 months of his deal, following Louis van Gaal's decision that the former England international would be surplus to requirements at the Theatre of Dreams.
He's spent the majority of the 2014/15 campaign playing regular first-team football at Villa Park, but has so far failed to agree a permanent deal with Tim Sherwood's side.
With a number of other Premier League clubs - Everton, Sunderland and West Ham United to name just a few - also reportedly interested in the £70,000-a-week star's signature, Cleverley appears to be keeping his options open until the end of the current campaign when he'll become a free agent.
Pochettino has been responsible for the recent rise of Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb in north London, and could be the perfect coach to coax the best out of Cleverley if he agrees to join Tottenham.
The prospect of challenging around the top four and playing Europa League football will be used as a bargaining tool to convince the Manchester United outcast that his future will be best served at Spurs.
However, Cleverley must balance those pros against the con that he would be far from certain of commanding a regular place in the team given the stronger competition for places than at some of his other suitors in England's top-flight.
The failure to make the grade at Manchester United might well still play on Cleverley's mind, and he'll be determined to avoid another scenario where he's languishing on the sidelines without an opportunity to show what he can do.
