Atletico Madrid defender Juanfran has sensationally revealed that he twice turned down the chance to join Arsenal, claiming his general happiness at the Vicente Calderon left him with no desire to leave.
The Spain international was heavily linked with a prospective switch to the Emirates Stadium last summer, prior to the £12 million arrival of Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United.
However, the 30-year-old rejected Arsene Wenger's advances for the second time in his career, choosing instead to remain with Los Colchoneros whom he's been with since 2011.
Juanfran is currently enjoying his fourth season with Diego Simeone's side after joining from Osasuna for a fee of just over €4 million. He's established himself as Atletico's first-choice right-back and has gone on to make 133 appearances.
The full-back actually started his career with Real Madrid, but left the Santiago Bernabeu in 2006 following a lack of regular first-team opportunities.
He enjoyed a season-long loan spell with Espanyol in 2005/06 which gave him a taste of regular action in La Liga, and that's what ultimately prompted him to push for a move away from Los Blancos at the end of that campaign.
The Spaniard has won four major trophies during his career, the Copa del Rey, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and most notably the Primera Division title last season, whilst also coming close to lifting the Champions League after losing out to Real Madrid in last year's final.
This year it's looking increasingly unlikely that Atletico are going to be able to defend their domestic crown with a nine-point gap between themselves and leaders Barcelona with only eight league games remaining.
But, clearly Juanfran is still very content with life in Simeone's squad after declaring his satisfaction in a recent interview with Radio Marca.
"I know where I am. Atletico have pushed for me to stay,” he was quoted saying by the Daily Star. “I rejected two offers from Arsenal. It's what I feel.”
Every cloud has a silver lining...
Gunners fans will not be too disappointed about missing out on Juanfran's signature following the rise of another talented young full-back Hector Bellerin in north London this season.
Had the veteran defender agreed to join Arsenal then perhaps the 20-year-old would not have been afforded his chance in Wenger's first-team, so Juanfran's decision turned out to be beneficial for all parties.
