Chicago Bears’ decision to sign Jay Cutler to a huge contract extension last year has to go down as one of the biggest mistakes that the storied franchise has made this century.
The Bears made the decision on the back of average play from Cutler, and yet again last season the signal caller showed more of the same form.
It will be a long time before the Bears can get rid of Cutler. The nature of his contract means that any interested trade partners would have to front up Cutler’s extortionate contract, making it incredibly unlikely that he will be leaving Chicago anytime soon.

But in the meantime, just because Cutler is the number one QB in Chicago right now does not mean he will always be. And reports on Friday revealed that the Bears are already looking to the future and the quarterback position.
NFL.com reported on Friday that the Bears met up with former Oregon Ducks quarterback and first round draft prospect Marcus Mariota, which could well point to the Bears’ desire to take him in 2015 NFL Draft.

“The Chicago Bears, who have the No. 7 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, brought in Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota for a meeting last week,” NFL.com reported.
“The meeting occurred in Chicago in the beginning of April, according to a tweet by ESPN's Adam Schefter.”
Even if the Bears draft Mariota, it does not mean that he will be competition for Cutler. Aaron Rodgers is the perfect example of a quarterback who was drafted and then bided his time behind Brett Favre at the Green Bay Packers, before becoming the player he is today.
Many experts believe that Mariota needs some seasoning in the NFL, and NFL media analyst Daniel Jeremiah believes a move for Mariota by the Bears would be the best thing for both parties.
"You have Jay Cutler there, and that's a good thing," Jeremiah said. "You let Marcus Mariota sit and develop for a couple of years. ... I think you could have a nice payoff if you're allowed to develop Marcus Mariota on the practice field, and Jay Cutler gives you that opportunity."
