Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has released an Instagram post claiming he's proud to be a red after the club's emphatic victory over rivals Manchester City yesterday.

Louis van Gaal's side secured a fine 4-2 win over their neighbours on home soil, and De Gea was clearly overjoyed by the crucial result as the club go in search of claiming a place in next year's Champions League.

Crucial victory

In fact, the result put a clear gap between United and their rivals, with the Old Trafford outfit now four points ahead of City, who sit in fourth, while they have a lead of nine points over fifth placed Southampton.

United fans certainly have the bragging rights over City for now, and De Gea, while also being proud to play for United, was proud of the club's fans, who roared the side to victory yesterday afternoon.

The message on his Official Instagram page read: "Proud to be Red, proud of the crowd! Keep on!"

There's no doubt about it, the Red Devils support will be hoping De Gea and Co. continue their remarkable form and secure a place in Europe's elite competition sooner rather than later. With a crunch clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge upcoming, thing's aren't going to get any easier for Van Gaal's men.

United on the way back

There's no doubt about it, until the last six games or so, De Gea has been Manchester United's standout and most consistent player of the season, but other stars have finally started proving themselves at the Theatre of Dreams of late.

From Marouane Fellaini to Juan Mata, the outfield members of the United side have been putting in some fine performances, which has ultimately led Van Gaal's side to six straight Premier League wins.

The most pleasing thing for fans of the Red Devils will no doubt be the fact that the side are no longer totally reliant on De Gea in goal.

It's great having the Spaniard in such exceptional form, but he should only be needed now and again as the club continue to progress under the Dutch regime.
