Angel di Maria could be used in a summer swap deal with Real Madrid according to Terry Gibson.
The Argentinian joined the Red Devils for just shy of £60 million in the summer from the Spanish giants, but has so far failed to live up to his price tag.
He's managed just three Premier League goals in 23 games so far this season, and has recently been dropped to the bench in favour of the in-form Ashley Young. Recent reports have suggested that a move to Paris Saint-Germain could be on the cards, however Gibson claimed on Sky Sports' La Liga Weekly Podcast that a return to Spain is possible, but only if both clubs already have a target lined up with the other.
"It depends on the price, and depends if there’s any other business that Manchester United want to do with Real Madrid or vice versa," he said. "Would the two clubs come together in terms of transfer dealings? I’d be very surprised if Di Maria went back to Real Madrid."
Real Madrid have been heavily linked with a move for Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, who is stalling on committing his future to the Red Devils with around a year left on his contract. Defender Raphael Varane has been linked with a move in the opposite direction to Old Trafford.
Just yesterday Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville insisted that Manchester United must fight to keep De Gea from Real Madrid - or try and engineer a swap deal if they can't do that.
"United need to try and keep him," he told Sky Sports. "If they’re not going to keep him, there’s only one club you can think of that is going to come in for him. United have got to take someone off them."
It seems far more likely that De Gea would be used in a swap deal than Di Maria. The Argentinian has had a tough season but it doesn't seem to work financially to move him back the the Bernabeu.
Of course there are a host of top talents in Real Madrid who could improve Louis van Gaal's team, including Varane who is a top quality operator. Luka Modric has been linked with the Red Devils in the past but landing a midfielder isn't such a pressing issue for them for now, while they need a forward and Karim Benzema could be the man for the job.
