Chelsea are considering making a bid that would activate the release clause embedded in Benfica star Nicolas Gaitan’s contract, according to reports in Portugal.
As per the back pages of Portuguese daily A Bola, Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the 27-year-old and will look to make a deal for him come the summer. This is in spite of the fact that Colombia star Juan Cuadrado was purchased in January and that Chelsea have been linked with a move for former playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.
It’s said that Gaitan, who has plied his trade in Portugal’s elite division since 2010, has impressed Mourinho with his captivating displays and, if A Bola are to be believed, The Special One’s interest extends to the point of him being ready to potentially upset the apple-cart by adding yet another forward to his roster.

Currently at Stamford Bridge there’s a surplus of quality attacking players, with the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian proving that they’re potent enough to get round even the sturdiest defences. With that in mind it will be interesting to see how Gaitan fits into the fold, with at least one player sure to be let go to make room if he does come in.
Who that player is remains to be seen, although Oscar has found himself the most frequently linked with an exit in recent times. Cuadrado has yet to make an impact since arriving from Fiorentina but is certain to be given more time to adjust to the Premier League, whilst Hazard is considered indispensable.

With Gaitan possessive of a release clause that stands at £25.5 million he is definitely affordable for Chelsea. The Blues of course have the backing of Roman Abramovich and their coffers will be boosted further should they manage to finish the season as champions.
Question marks however might remain over Gaitan's suitability, particularly as he is relatively unproven outside of Portugal. The Premier League would represent a massive step up in competition and more reputable names than he have been unable to successfully make a transition from the continent to English football.
