Manchester United winger Ashley Young is prepared to take a pay cut to remain at Old Trafford.

This is according to the Daily Mail, who claim that the England international could sign a new three year deal with the Red Devils in the upcoming weeks.

Pay cut

However, with the same report revealing that the former Aston Villa man is currently on huge £120,000-a-week at the club, it appears that he would be willing to reduce his salary in order to lengthen his stint at the Premier League giants.

The report from the Mail has revealed that his representatives will hold talks with United chief executive Ed Woodward sooner rather than later, but it remains to be seen as to whether they will come to an agreement over his future.

There's no doubt about it, Louis van Gaal will most certainly be hoping to have Young at his disposal for some time yet, with the player having proved a key man under his regime so far.

In fact, throughout the course of the campaign, Young has been terrific for the club, playing out-wide and at wing-back.

And against rivals Manchester City this past weekend, the versatile ace produced one of his best displays for the club as they secured a crucial victory over the current Premier League champions.

Scoring one and creating two, Young was a constant threat down the left-hand side of the pitch, and looks set to play a key role as the club go in search of claiming a place in next year's Champions League in the final stages of the campaign.

Hard work paying off

Of course Young has had his critics for many years now. From diving controversies to inconsistent form, the man brought to the club by the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson has never really been able to hold his place down in the side.

Under Van Gaal, though, that has changed. At 29-years-old, he's seemingly in the best form of his career and deserves great praise for  the way he's handled himself over the course of the campaign.

He's clearly loyal to the Red Devils, too, and certainly knows his role in the side, so should be rewarded with a contract extension.
