Chelsea are preparing to announce a £4.5million deal that will see Brazilian sensation Nathan make a move to Stamford Bridge, reports The Mail.
Talks have moved so swiftly between Chelsea and Atletico Paranaense that the Blues could announce the transfer on Wednesday. He would be Jose Mourinho's first summer signing and his capture would represent a significant victory over Premier League rivals Manchester City.
Nathan was in London on Tuesday to undergo routine medical checks and was given the all clear by Chelsea staff. Stamford Bridge officials have been negotiating with both the 19-year-old's club and his representatives alongside Manchester City, but the player has since decided that west London is the best place to develop his massive potential.
The attacking midfielder will leave Brazil with a reputation that has grown exponentially in the past 12 months. He has been a star for the the Atletico Paranaense first-team and has also represented Brazil at Under-20 level.
Chelsea first spotted Nathan at the World Under 17 Championship two years ago and have been tracking his development ever since. After he became embroiled in a bitter dispute with Atletico Paranaense officials over his contract, Chelsea decided to swoop.
Nathan will join his compatriots Oscar, Filipe Luis, Ramires, Wallian and Oscar. Diego Costa is also Brazilian, but elected to play for the Spanish national team. He will be hoping to be as successful as Oscar, who plays in a very similar role for the Chelsea first team now.
However, Chelsea's policy is usually to loan out the young stars in the hope that they will reach their potential elsewhere. The Blues can then elect to bring them back into the team, like Thibaut Courtois, or sell them, like Romelu Lukaku.
There is no mention as to whether Nathan will require a work permit, but he has not played in enough internationals to qualify automatically. Unless he has the right to apply for an EU passport, Chelsea will have to convince the FA that he is an exceptional talent, otherwise they will have to loan him abroad.
