Adrian Peterson has spent the last few months in complete limbo, and deservedly so.

The star running back is now edging closer to getting reinstated, but do not think for one second that that is going to make headlines surrounding the Vikings player any less compelling.

Peterson is eligible to apply for reinstatement today, but it is likely the NFL will let this situation play out for a few more days or weeks, according to reports.

Peterson is desperate

Nonetheless, Peterson is hell bent on accelerating this process of getting reinstated to the NFL as soon as possible. But why does he want to do this asap?

Well, according to reports from NFL media insider Ian Rapoport today, Peterson wants to be reinstated before the draft so he can be traded away from the Vikings. It is true that Peterson could have been traded weeks ago, but no NFL teams will likely trade with the Vikings for Peterson until he is reinstated by the NFL.

"Today is the earliest that Adrian Peterson can apply for reinstatement, but my sources tell me that nothing much will happen today," Ian Rapoport told NFL.com on Tuesday.

"However, what Peterson hopes is to be completely eligible and reinstated before the draft so he can potentially be traded, which is something that Adrian said he would welcome."

Worrying report for Vikings fans

These comments are certainly worrying for Vikings fans who want to see Peterson suiting up again for Minnesota next season. But the more talk that comes out of the Vikings and the Peterson camps, the more that that seems unlikely.

Trading Peterson might actually be a great move for the Vikings in the short-term and the long-term. They can avoid paying him the $12 million he is due next season, and they can increase their talent at the running back in the long-term by picking up a star rookie or maybe trading with another team like the Arizona Cardinals for up and coming star Andre Ellington.

The news of a potential trade for Peterson will be great news for Jerry Jones, who is a known admirer of the running back and his interest could take Peterson to the Dallas Cowboys.

But what do NFL fans think of a potential trade for Peterson? Should the Vikings trade him away?

Should the Cowboys or the Cardinals make a play for him? Leave your thoughts in the comments box below.
