AC Milan midfielder Nigel de Jong is ready to accept a move to Manchester United, providing they agree to meet his salary demands of £80,000-a-week.
The Daily Telegraph reports that the former Manchester City star - who will be a free agent in the summer - is willing to forget about the fierce rivalry he previously had with the Red Devils in order to link up with Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.
De Jong has attracted admiring glances from a host of top European clubs, and already has offers from Serie 'A' rivals Juventus and AS Roma to join them on a Bosman free transfer in the summer.
La Liga side Sevilla and a number of Major League Soccer franchises have also been in touch with the 30-year-old. However, his preference would be to return to the Premier League - the division he departed in 2012 when he was sold by the Citizens for around £3.5 million.
Van Gaal is a huge admirer of the midfield enforcer after working together during their time with the Netherlands national team.
De Jong was one of Holland's star performers at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and was linked with a possible switch to the Theatre of Dreams last summer.
A transfer never transpired and so the Dutchman stayed in Italy to see out the last year of his contract at the San Siro, and he's continued to play an important role in Pippo Inzaghi's first-team, making 22 appearances and contributing four goals in all competitions this term.
The most recent of those strikes came in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Sampdoria after De Jong converted an audacious overhead kick - with the help of a deflection - to salvage a point for the Rossoneri against the European hopefuls.
De Jong was actually pretty lucky to still be on the pitch when he scored after avoiding punishment for a dangerously late sliding tackle, but it wasn't long before he was in the referee's book due to leading with his elbow during an aerial duel.
That uncompromising, no-nonsense approach is something that Manchester United supporters will need to get used to if 'The Destroyer' does indeed join in the summer. But, given that Van Gaal's existing midfield options are all pretty lightweight his physical presence should be welcomed at Old Trafford.
