Louis van Gaal seems set on hiring a tough tackling midfield enforcer this summer and looks set to end his interest in AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman. The Dutchman was seen as Van Gaal's first choice, but, as of yet, he has been unable to recover from a serious knee injury.
Likewise, Arturo Vidal was also seen as a target for Van Gaal, but he has also had niggling knee problems that have left people doubting whether he can make it in the Premier League. Real Madrid's Sami Khedira is seen as his first-choice now, but even he has sustained cruciate ligament damage before.
Unlike Vidal and Strootman, however, Khedira appears to have rekindled his pre-injury form and, with his contract at the Bernabeu expiring this summer, would come at the bargain price of £0.
However, Chelsea appear to be the favourites to land Khedira. Jose Mourinho has retained a strong relationship with the Germany international and both seem intent on a reunion at Stamford Bridge.
Manchester United seemed to have sensed this and are already looking for alternative options. One of them is Matuidi, who has inspired interest from Old Trafford in the past.
Matuidi, 28, would come with a heap of experience at both club and international level. He has been a key performer under Laurent Blanc at Parc des Princes and the Parisians are unlikely to let him go for anything but a sizeable transfer fee.
Luckily, Manchester United have more money than most. Old Trafford officials have given Louis van Gaal £150million to spend in the summer transfer window with several world-class stars expected to arrive in Manchester.
Van Gaal is also looking to sign a central defender with Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels topping the list and a striker to replace the departing Radamel Falcao.
Edinson Cavani, Matuidi's team-mate, is believed to be one of Van Gaal's top choices, opening the possibility of a massive double transfer swoop. Wouldn't that be nice?
Is Blaise Matuidi the man to add steel to the Manchester United midfield or should Louis van Gaal be going for someone even better?
