Real Madrid could offer Spanish midfielder Asier Illaramendi to either of Arsenal or Liverpool this summer, according to the Daily Mail.
The report claims that the former Real Sociedad man, who has endured a tricky time under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti at the Bernabeu this term, may well leave Spain in a cut price £18 million deal in the upcoming transfer window.
The report from the Mail has suggested that both the Gunners and Liverpool hold an interest in the player, but it remains to be seen as to whether they'd be willing to splash the cash in an attempt to lure him to the Premier League.
Yet to make a senior appearance for the Spanish national team, Illaramendi, at 25-years-old, is certainly a fine talent, but is clearly in need of first-team football on a regular basis.
In fact, as well as the Premier League duo, the same report claims that his former side Sociedad are interested in signing him, as David Moyes continues to make his mark in La Liga.
Time to move on
Having played backup to the duo of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos this term, it's certainly unlikely that he's going to break into the Real starting XI on a consistent basis anytime soon.
There's no doubt about it, Illaramendi will be desperate to get his career back on track sooner rather than later, so you'd expect a deal to go through in the summer.
A holding midfielder by trade, Illaramendi would certainly fit into both Arsenal or Liverpool if he made the move to England this summer. Arsenal, of course, already have a Spanish contingent at the club, with the likes of Mikel Arteta, Nacho Monreal and Co. already plying their trade in north London.
Liverpool, on the other hand, are clearly in need of strengthening in the middle of the park with Steven Gerrard set to depart the club. Illaramendi would no doubt improve Brendan Rodgers' options at Anfield, but it's far from certain as to whether the player would be interested in a move to the club if they fail to secure Champions League football for next season.
One thing's for sure, at just £18m, Illaramendi would be worth the risk, so this saga may well continue for some time yet.
