Real Madrid are aiming to ensure that Raphael Varane signs a new deal soon, and are less concerned with securing an extension for Pepe as a result.
That’s according to reports - specifically Mundo Deportivo - in Spain that claim Florentino Perez was impressed with the level of maturity Varane displayed during the Champions League encounter with Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon stadium earlier on this week.
The soon to be 22-year-old started the game alongside Sergio Ramos in the heart of Los Blancos’ defence, and was an impressive feature in the team that held Diego Simeone’s men to a 0-0 draw.
Of course his eye-catching ability isn’t anything unheard of and his reputation across Europe has meant that suitors have never been far away.
A persistent admirer, if the rumour-mill is to be believed, is Jose Mourinho of Chelsea, who can boast having been the driving force behind Varane singing for Real back in 2011 when he was manager. Manchester United are also said to be interested, though Mats Hummels is likely to be a preferred option given his levels of experience.
Naturally Real know that they own one of the most talented young players in Europe and aren’t likely to be willing to play ball with any negotiations.
They can make their lives far easier if Varane signs a new deal at the Santiago Bernabeu before the summer transfer window opens, and if they choose not to do the same with Pepe they’d be sending a strong message that Varane is the man they want in their back-line for the foreseeable future.
Future to be decided
That in itself might be enough to settle the starlet’s future for good as he’ll be more ready to treat with his current club if he has solid assurances over his prospects. After all, what reason would Varane have to leave the bright lights of Real if he were a guaranteed first-choice defender?
No, if Perez, and indeed Carlo Ancelotti, are serious about keeping a man who could turn out to be one of the best defenders of his generation they know what must be done. Unfortunately for Pepe that means him being replaced in the starting XI and his contract extension plans being scrapped, although the 32-year-old can hardly have grounds for complaint if that is the eventuality.
