Manchester United have not yet struck a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels but are keen to sign the German World Cup winner.
This is according to a senior club source at Old Trafford - the story brought to our attention by the Daily Star’s chief sports writer Jeremy Cross - who is quoted as confirming that Hummels is one of several names on Louis van Gaal’s summer transfer wish-list.
The source revealed: ”No deal has been done but he is someone we want to sign, like several others this summer."
United set to table £30m bid
The report adds that United have already held talks with Hummels’ representatives and are expected to table a £30 million offer when the transfer window re-opens this summer.
The 26-year-old, who is also on the radar of both Chelsea and Arsenal, reportedly made the decision to leave Borussia Dortmund before Jurgen Klopp announced his plans to depart Signal Iduna Park earlier this week.
Do United need Mats Hummels?
Hummels is also understood to have informed several of his Germany international teammates that a transfer to United is edging ever closer - and that Old Trafford is his preferred destination.
There’s little doubt Hummels would bring some much-needed leadership to United’s defence, but the partnership between Chris Smalling and Phil Jones has blossomed in recent weeks, which might make Van Gaal think twice before shelling out a fortune on the Borussia Dortmund skipper this summer.
