Arsenal have been heavily linked with Manchester City midfielder James Milner in recent months, and it appears Gunners fans are perfectly happy with the rumours.
In a poll undertaken by the London Evening Standard it became apparent that 60% of Arsenal fans asked would be happy to see Arsene Wenger sign the England international, with the Emirates Stadium his supposed favoured destination if a new deal with City cannot be reached.
As it stands the 29-year-old has rejected terms to the tune of £80,000-a-week - a deal that would have given him another three years at the Etihad Stadium - as he wants a minimum four-year contract. Arsenal and Liverpool are the main competitors for his signature on English shores, though other teams on the continent, including Roberto Mancini’s Inter Milan, are also interested.
Under Manuel Pellegrini Milner has often been shunted out into a wide position despite the fact that he wants to play centrally. With the likes of Yaya Toure, Fernando, Fernandinho and David Silva competing for spots it’s been an arduous task for the ex-Aston Villa man to get satisfactory game-time, which could be another factor in him being open to an exit.
The poll result
If nothing else the aforesaid poll is indicative of the fact that Arsenal supporters wouldn’t begrudge Wenger signing the versatile midfielder.
With Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky both running on ageing legs the acquisition of an individual to put himself about - which Milner is infamous for - could be just what’s needed for the Gunners to get renewed bite in the middle of the park.
Morgan Schneiderlin of Southampton is another who finds himself consistently linked with Arsenal and it could come down to being one or of the other with regards to who Wenger signs. The France international is certainly the better option in terms of age and strength at protecting the back four but on this occasion would Arsenal be right to opt for experience instead?
