David de Gea embarrassed himself with premature celebration

Manchester United will feel somewhat aggrieved that they left Stamford Bridge on Saturday with nothing to show for it as Eden Hazard’s solitary goal put Chelsea on the brink of Premier League glory.

Louis van Gaal’s side enjoyed a mammoth 70 percent of the possession over the duration of the encounter at Stamford Bridge but were unable to breach the typically resolute defence of Chelsea.

The travelling support did, however, believe they had opened the scoring within the first five minutes following an effort from Wayne Rooney which rippled the net after going narrowly wide of the post.

But the Manchester United fans were not the only ones to have thought Rooney had put the ball between the posts, as David de Gea also appeared convinced that the club captain had stroked home.

De Gea was pictured pumping his fists in delight and screaming ‘Vamos!’ towards the away end, only for the Spaniard to quickly realise that the shot from Rooney had not actually gone in. A rather embarrassing moment.

Defeat for Manchester United saw them forgo the opportunity to rise above Arsenal into second place in the Premier League, although their position in the coveted top four would seem secured.

A return to the Champions League was the goal for this season but this performance against Chelsea will have provided encouragement that a title challenge could be on the cards in the next campaign.
