Angel di Maria has informed Louis van Gaal he's determined to stay and fight for his place at Manchester United next season, and that he has no plans to leave Old Trafford in the summer despite experiencing the toughest year of his career.
The former Real Madrid winger has endured an entirely underwhelming debut campaign at the Theatre of Dreams after joining the Red Devils for a club-record £59.7 million last August.
Much was expected of the Argentina international - who reportedly earns £280,000-a-week - but he's failed to live up to lofty expectations and was named on the substitutes' bench for yesterday's 1-0 defeat against Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Di Maria has struggled to settle in England ever since falling victim to an attempted armed burglary at his Cheshire home in February, and he's drifted in and out of the Manchester United team ever since as Van Gaal continues to show patience to the South American.
The 27-year-old and his family - wife Jorgelina and daughter Mia - have now found solace in a city centre apartment, and the Sunday People reports that Di Maria is in discussions about extending the lease on that rented property, which provides the clearest indication yet that he will still be a Red Devils player next term.
The 2014 World Cup finalist has told friends privately that the past nine months have been the most difficult of his professional career, having also struggled to cope with the physical demands and intensity of English top-flight football.
However, despite the catalogue of problems that have tarnished Di Maria's first campaign in Manchester, Van Gaal remains confident that he'll have a major role to play next season and has been encouraged by the recent change in attitude the player has shown in training.
