Manchester United watched Jackson Martinez in Champions League showdown

Manchester United scouts watched Porto striker Jackson Martinez star against German giants Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week.

This has been reported by the Daily Mail, who claim that officials from the Red Devils were in attendance as the forward scored his 23rd goal of the campaign as Porto beat the Bavarians by three goals to one in the first leg of the quarter-final.

United interest

It appears, then, that the Colombian ace, who has been in tremendous form throughout the course of the campaign, is on Manchester United's radar as the club go in search of improving in the attacking department ahead of the 2015/15 campaign.

United's strikers have endured tricky seasons under the guidance of Louis van Gaal this term, with the duo of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao failing to produce the goods on a consistent basis.

Van Persie has struggled with fitness of late and has failed to hit top form, while Falcao's stint at the Theatre of Dreams has never really got going.

Perhaps, then, United will look towards Martinez as the man to solve their problems in attack, but he certainly won't come cheap.

In fact, the same report from the Mail claims that he could cost the Red Devils as much as £30 million, so it remains to be seen as to whether the clubs hierarchy step up their interest in him anytime soon.

A risk?

One thing's for sure, with his incredible track record in front of goal, he would prove quite the coup for the club, but it may well be an expensive gamble as he's yet to show what he can do in England's elite division.

And, at 28-years of age, some United fans may well have been hoping that the club would invest in a youngster striker as they go in search of long term success.

You can hardly blame Van Gaal, however, for wanting to bring a top-class striker to the club, especially after the struggles of Van Persie and Falcao this season.

With United now looking likely to enter the Champions League next season, too, the Dutch boss will no doubt be hoping that his side continue to go from strength-to-strength.
