Liverpool make contact over Memphis Depay bid

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is moving forward to sign Manchester United transfer target Memphis Depay this summer.

According to Daily Mail, Liverpool have already reached out to Depay’s representatives to sound out his interest in joining the club.

Earlier today PSV Eindhoven confirmed that Manchester United made an enquiry for the Dutch forward earlier this season, and they are currently the favourites to sign him this summer.

The 21-year-old has scored 23 goals for PSV this season and is one of the best young talents in Dutch football. He played for the Netherlands under Louis van Gaal at the World Cup in Brazil last summer.

Liverpool believe they can make a convincing case to Depay to reject United in favour of an Anfield switch.

Despite the fact that van Gaal’s side look the most likely to qualify for the Champions League next season, Liverpool officials want to make the case to Depay that he stands a better chance of regular first team football on Merseyside.

United do have the advantage of van Gaal, who is familiar with the PSV star from his time with the national team.

Spurs made an offer for Depay last year, believed to be in the region of €18m, but PSV are looking for something closer to €30m for one of the best strikers in the Eredivisie.

CR7 comparison

Depay has been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo, perhaps a little over enthusiastically - but the youngster is a promising young talent.

He can be maddeningly inconsistent at times, but flashes genius at others and that’s what Liverpool and Manchester United would be paying big money for.
