Manchester United could complete the signing of Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels once the Bundesliga season is completed, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The report claims that Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is determined to secure his summer deals as soon as possible as he goes in search of securing success at the club in the 2015/16 campaign.
United, of course, splashed the cash in Van Gaal's debut summer at the club, however the Dutchman had to integrate a number of his new signings in the early stages of the season.
It appears, then, that he wants to do things differently this time round, meaning Hummels could now arrive on English soil sooner rather than later.
After Jurgen Klopp revealed that he's set to leave Dortmund at the end of the season, Hummels' long term future at the Bundesliga giants certainly appears to be in doubt.
The German ace, who starred on the international scene at this past summer's World Cup, is recognised as one of the leading defenders in world football after proving his credentials on the European scene for some time now.
Things have proved tricky for Hummels at times this season, however, so he could now opt for a new challenge, with a move to Manchester United possible.
And, there's no doubt about it, Hummels would prove quite the coup for the Red Devils as they go about challenging for the Premier League title next term.
Ultimately, despite improvements of late, United have lacked a leader at the back throughout the course of the season, which would only hand the experienced German a key role in the heart of the club's defence.
Of course, after losing the trio of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra last summer, it was always going to be difficult for United's young defenders to step up. The addition of Hummels, then, could be the missing piece of the jigsaw for Van Gaal at Old Trafford.
If the United boss manages to establish a solid back-line, then he will feel extremely confident of taking his new-look team to the next level in 2015/16.
