“I want to know why that is still on the bridge,” Claude said to his fellow Arsenal Fan TV star Ty. “He kissed the Chelsea badge, so why is that still on our bridge, it’s a disgrace!”
Ty then gave a measured response, but admitted: “I think Cesc is wrong. If you didn’t love the badge, why say you love the badge? Just be truthful.”
But before he’d barely finished his sentence, the gruff-voiced Claude barked: “Take that down!”
The Arsenal faithful loved Fabregas and always hoped he would one day return to the Emirates Stadium after rejoining his boyhood cub, Barcelona, in the summer of 2011.
Arsenal fans are harsh on Fabregas
But the Spain international tarnished his legacy in the eyes of the Gunners’ faithful by accepting Jose Mourinho’s call to join Chelsea last summer.
What Arsenal fans must remember, however, is that Fabregas almost certainly would have rejoined the Gunners had Arsene Wenger given the green light.
But Wenger, somewhat bizarrely, rejected the opportunity to bring the technically-gifted assist machine to north London - and so Fabregas, who wanted to leave Barcelona, cautiously accepted Mourinho’s offer.
Fabregas' move to Chelsea has paid off
It’s proved to be the right decision. Fabregas is already a key player for Chelsea and is now poised to land his hands on the Premier League trophy for the first time in his career.
“It's been five years for them without winning the Premier League title,” Fabregas told reporters earlier this week. “For me it's been 27 years so I'd love to win it as soon as possible."
Wenger snubbed the chance to re-sign Fabregas due to the fact he already possessed a number of players who play in similar positions at the Emirates Stadium, but surely having the former Barcelona star in his ranks would have increased the Gunners’ chances of winning the league.
In 28 Premier League appearances this season, Fabregas has scored three goals and provided a superb 16 assists - no player in England’s top flight has contributed more.
Some Arsenal fans will claim Fabregas could have joined any other club - with the exception of Tottenham, of course - but would they be happy if he was now plying his trade with either Manchester City or Manchester United? Hardly.
