Francis Coquelin has a plan for Eden Hazard

Francis Coquelin has been a revelation for Arsenal since bursting onto the scene at the start of the year.

The defensive midfielder returned to north London from his loan spell at Charlton Athletic as emergency cover for a midfield ravaged by injury, but is now one of the first names on Arsene Wenger's team sheet.

His emergence has coincided with a sharp upturn in Arsenal's fortunes. They have won eight Premier League games on the bounce and will contest a second consecutive FA Cup final next month.

Now the 23-year-old is facing up to his biggest challenge yet when Premier League champions elect Chelsea make the short trip to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal will fancy their chances against Jose Mourinho's men. A victory may not win them the title, but it would certainly throw the gauntlet down ahead of next season.

Comfortable victory

The Blues comfortably beat Arsenal in the reverse fixture earlier this season with Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard playing starring roles in a 2-0 victory.

“Hazard and Cesc Fabregas are great players who can do such great things at any time in the day"

But Coquelin believes he is up to the task and knows what it takes to nullify the threat from the attacking duo.

Different opposition

He told Arsenal's official website: "Liverpool have Philippe Coutinho and now it’s going to be different opposition with Eden Hazard.

"He is probably one of the best players in the league, maybe even the best this season. It’s going to be a tough game but like in every big game you want to win.

"You need to be focused the whole time and that’s what I’m trying to do for the 90 minutes."

Matic praise

Coquelin has regularly been compared to Chelsea's Nemanja Matic, who plays an identical role deep in the midfield.

The Frenchman admits he has a lot of admiration for the Serbian and admits he is trying his best to emulate his achievements.

“What he’s done is unbelievable,” he said. “At Chelsea he is one of the main men so credit to him, he’s had a great season and is a great player. It’s always good to play against players like that.

“It’s an important position and Matic has shown how important he is - that’s what I’m trying to do as well for Arsenal. The fans want a good defensive midfielder, they know it’s important for the team.”

There will be plenty of eyes on the two midfield powerhouses this Sunday with many expecting the winner of this battle to have a massive say on the outcome of the match.
