Liverpool's season took another huge hit after falling to Aston Villa in the FA cup semi-final at Wembley.
Philippe Coutinho put the Reds ahead in the 30th minute, but the lead was short lived as Villa fan favourite Christian Benteke equalised just six minutes later; however it was Fabian Delph's goal in the 54th minute that decided the match.
Aston Villa dominated the match for the best part of 75 minutes, despite the fact they were missing key players for the semi-final clash that included the likes of Gabriel Agbonlahor, Ciaran Clark, Carlos Sanchez and Alan Hutton.
The Merseyside club were unable to take advantage of a weakened Villa outfit, but taking nothing away from Villa it was a poor performance from Liverpool.
The significant lack of passion and desire from the Liverpool players was visible, it just seemed like the Villans wanted it more; which is rather surprising considering it would have been a perfect send off for Steven Gerrard to win the FA Cup with his boyhood club on his birthday before departing to LA Galaxy.
Mario Balotelli is often the first to be blamed by many for a defeat, but it wouldn't be right to blame him for the semi-final loss as the Italian striker was one player on the field for the Reds who seemed to give it his all.
The Anfield outfit are now staring at the prospect of missing out on a top four berth as well as failing to add to their trophy cabinet. More pressure will be heaped on manager Brendan Rodgers, and with all respect it's really no surprise.
The money Liverpool received for the sale of Luis Suarez has failed to make too much of an impact, their transfer policy has been questioned and something should be done about it.
With top four looking increasingly unlikely for the Reds, they will have a huge battle on their hands to attract top players and Rodgers will need to fight to keep his job.
