Arsenal and Liverpool could do battle this summer for the services of AS Monaco star Geoffrey Kondogbia, with both clubs keeping tabs on him.
That’s according to information in the Daily Mail, where it’s claimed that Arsene Wenger is interested in resurrecting a transfer move for the midfielder, with Brendan Rodgers already in the hunt. Wenger made enquiries whilst the player was at Sevilla but his intrigue ultimately fizzled out. Now, its return could see him on a collision course with Rodgers.
Liverpool and Arsenal battle
The Liverpool boss is said to have a number of targets this summer as he looks to revamp his squad in the wake of Steven Gerrard’s departure to the MLS.

It’s believed a lack of Champions League football could be extremely costly when it comes to trying to lure certain individuals to the club, with the likes of Kondogbia surely not ready to accept a season out of Europe’s premier club competition now that they have garnered a taste for it.
Indeed in that respect Wenger could have an automatic advantage when it comes to the Frenchman, one that might just be enough to leave the Reds disappointed.

The Gunners’ interest in players like Morgan Schneiderlin is enough to indicate that an area Wenger is looking to bolster this summer is the one just in front of the back four and as Kondogbia showcased against Arsenal in the Champions League, he’s more than equipped to handle that detail.
Yet it’s Liverpool who might have the claim of needing him more, as Gerrard has occupied a similarly deep position in recent times. The former England international’s departure for LA Galaxy might not leave such a big hole as Luis Suarez’s move to Barcelona last summer did on the pitch, but all the same Rodgers now needs to pack his midfield with strong, inspiring characters.
Jordan Henderson is virtually a certainty to be given the captain’s armband when Gerrard leaves, and with it an ever-present spot in Rodgers’ first-team, but the spot alongside him has yet to be claimed by someone the fans would truly back for the future. Lucas is a useful candidate but there can be no mistaking how effective a roaming bulldozer like Kondogbia might be.
From the outside looking it it appears Arsenal have the upperhand if they want to use it, but with Wenger not having offered any proof that he is indeed going to make a move for Kondogbia, Liverpool could yet end up winning the day.
