Memphis Depay has just sent massive shockwaves through the body of every Manchester United fan after The Mail revealed he has been in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a potential summer transfer move.
Depay has been so heavily linked with a move to Manchester United that it is a wonder any other club has bothered to contact PSV Eindhoven regarding a deal. But the audacious Ligue 1 champions PSG have done just that.
Dialogue between PSG and Depay's representatives have been ongoing throughout the week and it is claimed that they have already gazumped the feeble offer made by Premier League outfit Liverpool.
Manchester United remain confident, if other reports are to be believed, but their lax approach to negotiations has now left them trailing in the race to land Depay's signature. They have, at least, told PSV that they intend to make a serious offer at some point in the near future.
Whether that promise is worth the paper it is written on is for PSV to decide, but we are guessing the newly crowned Eredivisie champions are not too fussed who they sell to.
Louis van Gaal still holds some influence over Depay. The pair apparently get on like a house of fire and it is believed the 20-year-old has his heart set on a move to what where Van Gaal manages a football team (Old Trafford).
But there is a lot to be said about PSG's credentials in this intriguing transfer battle. Their oily owners have deep pockets and, despite dancing along the line of Uefa's financial fair play, would be able to match any offer from Manchester United.
Not only that, but the chance to play alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack will be a tempting one for the young Dutchman.
If Bayern Munich, also rumoured to be interested, throw their hat in the ring then maybe Van Gaal's advantage disappears and Manchester United will have to go and find another talent young winger to play in his team.
Adnan Januzaj, maybe?
Are Manchester United at risk of missing out on Memphis Depay or is Louis van Gaal right to play it cool?
