Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has played down rumours linking goalkeeper Hugo Lloris with a move to Manchester United.
Lloris has been linked with a summer move away from White Hart Lane after the Guardian reported that the Frenchman wants to play Champions League football. With Spurs in 6th, and seemingly too far away from the top European places, Lloris won't be able to achieve his goals at Spurs next season.
Manchester United link
This lead to rumours linking the former Lyon man with a potential summer transfer to United, who almost certainly will be in the Champions League next season.
However Pochettino has been quick to move his player away from transfer speculation, insisting Lloris will wait to play Champions League football at White Hart Lane.
Focused on Tottenham
“There is no change, nothing from four, five or six months ago when we spoke about the rumour [before]. Hugo wants to play the Champions League here for Tottenham and these are rumours,” Pochettino told the Standard.
“Nothing is true. Nothing has changed the situation. He is happy here and wants to reach the Champions League with Tottenham that is his dream.”
Europa League tiredness
Pochettino has admitted that achieving a top-four place has been made harder by his side’s fruitless Europa League campaign. Tottenham’s stars have played ten more games than United, and Pochettino points to this as a reason for struggling.
“You spend a lot of energy when you play in the Europa League but you never know,” said Pochettino.
“It is true the experience of last season with Liverpool and now with Man United I think that is a clear example that maybe you will have the opportunity to stay closer to reach the top four if you only have focus on the Premier League and the cups,” he added.
Spurs travel to Southampton this weekend as manager Pochettino makes his long-awaited Saint Mary’s return having left the club for White Hart Lane this summer.
