Eden Hazard can become as good as Barcelona striker Lionel Messi, according to former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.
The Belgian has been in inspired form for the Blues this season, with many touting the former LOSC Lille man for the PFA Player of the year award.
Hazard has scored 18 goals in 45 appearances this term, all of which have helped Jose Mourinho’s mean cement their place at the Premier League summit. The Blues currently hold a 10 point lead over closest rivals Arsenal, whom they play at the Emirates this weekend.
And Hazard’s performances have caught the eye of former team-mate Schwarzer, who has described the Belgian as ‘phenomenal’.
“Who are we to argue with Pele? I have to agree with him,” the Leicester goalkeeper said, when asked about Hazard’s comparisons to the top two players in the world.
“He’s still got some way to go but he’s a phenomenal player. This season alone the step up from last season, in term of his consistency and level of play, has been extraordinary,” he told TalkSport.
Hazard hit the headlines again last week after his strike helped Chelsea to a 1-0 win over rivals Manchester United. The low-strike ensured Chelsea retained their ten point lead at the top-of-the-table, and Schwarzer is adamant that Hazard can become as good as Messi and Ronaldo if his good form continues.
“If he keeps doing what he’s doing then there’s no doubt in my mind that he’ll be able to be compared with Messi and Ronaldo,” Schwarzer said.
Chelsea go to the Emirates this weekend knowing a victory will all-but-secure Jose Mourinho a first league title since his return to the club.
