Jameis Winston is heading into the NFL Draft next week as the pre-destined number one overall pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It seems like a foregone conclusion that Roger Goodell will be stepping up to the podium in Chicago and calling Winston's name with the first overall pick. The former Florida State Seminoles star has it in the bag.
But the Heisman winner still has some detractors however, with one NFL executive even going as far as to compare Winston to one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history, JaMarcus Russell.
According to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, a longtime NFL reporter who uses unnamed quotes ripping prospects in advance of seemingly every draft, one such exec has come out and completely trashed Winston.
"With Jameis Winston I see JaMarcus Russell," a longtime executive in personnel said. "Isn't it interesting?"
If there is one quarterback in recent NFL history that Jameis doesn't want to be like, then it is Russell. The Raiders drafted Russell first overall in 2007 and the QB was done with football after three seasons, a 7-18 record and a passer rating of 65.2.
"Lack of focus by JaMarcus is what I see in Winston,” the personnel man apparently said. “They’re physically talented, but during the course of a game they kind of lose their focus and just put the ball up for grabs. I see the body. I see the lack of focus. I see the same coach and system. Only Winston’s not as good an athlete and his arm isn’t as strong as JaMarcus’.”
“Is (Winston) really going to be the first pick of the draft? You’d be drafting a quarterback that can’t run, has off-field problems, has no power in his legs and makes bad decisions on the field. Somebody’s going to make a horrible mistake.”
Winston is a much more complete quarterback than Russell ever was. He was a Heisman winner at FSU that only lost one game in his college career, instigating numerous comeback wins and making his teammates better.
