Attention now turns to the Extreme Rules pay-per-view, the first pay-per-view since WrestleMania 31 and fans will witness some entertaining stipulations on the night.
We have a Chicago Street Fight, a Last Man Standing match, a Cage match and even a Kiss Me Arse match, but Daniel Bryan’s status is still up in the air.
Confusion over whether he will defend his Intercontinental Championship against former champion, Bad News Barrett is just one of the intriguing questions set to be answered tonight.
PRE SHOW: WWE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP – TYSON KIDD & CESARO © VS. THE NEW DAY
Once more the tag team championship will be defended on the pre-show which does the prestige and importance of the titles no favours, but something has to be on there.
The New Day picked up a surprise victory over The Lucha Dragons this past week to reach this match and I’m impressed with how they’re dealing with the negativity from the WWE Universe. Plus, it’s been reported that The Lucha Dragons are set for a big tag team championship push soon, so they’ll probably be the team to dethrone the current champions.
Saying that, I don’t think they’re the right team to take the gold from Tyson Kidd and Cesaro who will be competing as faces on Sunday, they’re proving to be a great wrestling team with a lot of chemistry.
I expect Tyson Kidd and Cesaro to retain their tag team championships.
Fellow WWE Lead Writer Phillipa Hopwood has a similar view:
I can’t see Cesaro and Kidd dropping the titles here because they are on a good run as champions and the New Day haven’t been getting the reaction WWE had hoped for. I think The Lucha Dragons have a better chance of lifting the tag championships in the future, but for now Cesaro and Kidd will safely retain the gold.
RUSSIAN CHAIN MATCH FOR THE UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP – JOHN CENA © VS. RUSEV
I’m struggling to think what makes the chain Russian, but nevertheless we get a stipulation we don’t usually see - a WrestleMania rematch between Cena and Rusev. It’s good that Rusev is still looking a threat even though he lost his title and unbeaten streak earlier this month.
Cena has done a great job of making the United States Championship stay in the limelight with his weekly open challenge, and I believe that will continue considering there’s a chance we could get a new design for the title. Hopefully the match is more brutal than the first, a lot closer and that the chain plays a big role. As much as I want Rusev to win I can only see one winner in John Cena.
I predict there will be blood, which is strange for the WWE to allow, but it does happen in these kind of matches. Hopefully not to the extent that Cena’s match with Brock Lesnar turned into. I think we all know Cena is winning this one, he has become a better wrestler and performer in the past four weeks and I think this has helped him get over more as a champion with the fans.
I think it will be a violent match, but John Cena will retain.
WWE DIVAS CHAMPIONSHIP – NIKKI BELLA © VS. NAOMI
I’m glad Naomi is becoming a bit more relevant now, she clearly has the in-ring talent and her heel turn could open new doors for her as a character, but she needs to put on a good performance against Nikki.
I don’t think Naomi will be given the title just yet, but she can definitely make a good case for herself in this match and, with a potential feud with Paige once she returns, I don’t think Naomi will have the title when it does happen. I believe Nikki Bella will retain.
Heel vs. Heel, I have no idea how WWE are going to play this. Naomi deserves a Divas Championship but Nikki has looked good with the belt. There have been a few teasers that her sister Brie could come after the belt but she is still yet to.
It is a hard one to predict, could Paige be back to get revenge? Will this end clean? I think the safe bet is for Nikki Bella to retain.
WWE INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP – DANIEL BRYAN © VS. BAD NEWS BARRETT
I don’t think this match is going ahead. If it does it certainly won’t last too long but Bryan’s health comes first, if he isn’t ready then he needs to rest up again. The title could be vacated but, for Barrett to go over as more of a heel, he could simply take a forfeit victory and reclaim his belt.
However, even if the match does go ahead, we’re not sure how easy it will be for Bryan to not only compete against Barrett but turn up in future matches too. I think we have our one new champion being crowned in this match, Bad News Barrett will defeat Daniel Bryan.
If this match goes ahead I can only see Bryan coming out on top. Although if it doesn’t turn up then WWE have to strip Bryan of the title because it has been 30 days since he last defended it.
I think it should go ahead, Bryan will just have to be cautious and probably won’t put on as great a show as usual. But Daniel Bryan will still retain his championship.
CHICAGO STREET FIGHT – LUKE HARPER VS. DEAN AMBROSE
I’m looking forward to this match. These two have a unique chemistry mainly because they’re portrayed as psychopaths so they’re probably loving the idea of a street fight. Harper has looked very strong in the build-up to this feud whereas Ambrose hasn’t really looked at his best and is still floating around. It doesn't look like the WWE have a solid plan for him.
A loss doesn't hurt Harper, whilst a win is needed for Ambrose and, if the latter can put on a great show with Harper and pick up the win, this could be a match the fans enjoy. I believe Dean Ambrose defeats Luke Harper this Sunday.
This has to be the match of the night. Two like-minded, vicious guys who just want to fight will finally be unleashed against each other.
I think Dean Ambrose has to come out on top here, his win/loss record since The Shield split has been abysmal and WWE really need to start doing something with the Lunatic Fringe so that he can gain some momentum and head towards the championship that his former stable mates will soon be fighting for. I think Dean Ambrose will get the win here.
LAST MAN STANDING – THE BIG SHOW VS. ROMAN REIGNS
I can’t say I’m too excited about this match, considering we have now seen it one too many times and this feud isn’t doing Reigns any favours. Sure he’s working with a veteran from whom he can learn a lot, but it’s now boring. It’s that simple.
I hope the match surprises, I don’t think it will but I hope it does, it should be brutal, fought all over the arena and Roman Reigns needs to win, there’s no other way about it. I don’t think The Big Show will win based on the rumoured plans for Payback. Roman Reigns will be the last man standing.
How many times can we see these two go at it before WWE realise that no one cares? I understand that The Big Show won the Battle Royal at WrestleMania and, technically, he is in good form but this is a feud that is going nowhere and it doesn’t even matter who wins. I think it could be Roman Reigns.
KISS ME ARSE MATCH – SHEAMUS VS. DOLPH ZIGGLER
Talk about extreme stipulations. The rules are simple, the loser will kiss the winner’s arse. This isn’t something I expected with Sheamus as he returned as a heel, I was thinking we’d see him in a vicious, brutal match but I guess this is the best the writers could come up with.
I think Sheamus needs the win, but I believe Dolph Ziggler will be the winner. I don’t think Sheamus will forced into doing any arse kissing this Sunday but plenty of face kicking. I expect him to lay Ziggler out.
What? Why? I have no idea why they would put Dolph or Sheamus through this humiliation but it seems that is what they have both signed up for. Sadly I can see Sheamus coming out on top and hopefully Dolph runs away before he can be forced to do the unthinkable.
STEEL CAGE MATCH FOR THE WWE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP - SETH ROLLINS VS. RANDY ORTON
I am liking how Kane is playing a key role in the build-up to this match, as he prepares to play the gatekeeper during the fight itself. We’re seeing some friction between The Authority and Rollins now and maybe it’s time for The Authority to either turn face, or recruit someone else - only time will tell.
The Authority will play a part in this match. Whether it’s to help Rollins or not remains to be seen. I hope Rollins does put on a good display and show he deserves to be a champion and Orton needs to help him do that. I think it’s way too early for Rollins to drop the gold so there’s no question about it; Seth Rollins retains on Sunday.
There is no possible way this match is ending clean. Kane has to turn on Seth and it seems The Authority could also be set to turn on The Future because the tension between Rollins and Triple H has been teased over the past week.
I think Seth Rollins will get the win by any means necessary and then Orton will hit the RKO after the match to assert his own authority and set up a rematch at Payback. I hope other stars do get involved on Randy’s behalf because The Authority will definitely be there.
