Liverpool have stormed ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign PSV Eindhoven star Memphis Depay, sources have told Goal.
Depay and his representatives spent the best part of last week touring Europe in a fancy private jet. In between Instagramming photos of what a nice time they were all having, it appears they may have actually held detailed discussions with clubs regarding a summer transfer.
Having flown to Manchester airport, it seemed as if Depay would be heading to Carrington to discuss his future with United manager Louis van Gaal. When the player's agent tweeted a photo of the Aon Complex, those suspicions seemed to be confirmed.
But it is now believed the agent was at Carrington regarding another one of his clients and Depay was in Manchester to talk to officials from Liverpool.
The talks went down a treat as far as the striker was concerned and it is now being reported that he has had his head turned by what is on offer at Anfield. That is bad news for Manchester United, who have been slow to get negotiations off the ground.
The Red Devils have told Depay and PSV that they are interested in completing a deal, but they are now firmly behind Liverpool, who are in what can only be described as advanced negotiations.
Thanks to Van Gaal's relationship with Depay, Manchester United have been confident of completing a deal for the 20-year-old but they are yet to go as far as Liverpool and the player has been impressed with Brendan Rodgers' commitment to signing him.
Liverpool should be the least of Manchester United's worries if Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain decide to step up their interest in the Holland international.
Both are keen to agree a deal with PSV and have the financial power to match anything Van Gaal can. They will certainly have offers that are just as enticing as the one Liverpool offered last week.
Stop messing around
From the numerous reports surrounding Depay, it seems that he does have his heart set on a move to Old Trafford. However, if Van Gaal does not offer him the same attention as his other suitors then he risks missing out.
Manchester United have the manpower to get negotiations underway before the end of the season and it must now be seen as a priority if they want to bag this exciting talent.
Would Memphis Depay be right to reject Manchester United for Liverpool?
