Southampton are planning a surprise summer move for Chelsea striker Patrick Bamford after his impressive season-long loan spell with Middlesbrough. The England U21 international has netted 19 goals in all competitions at the Riverside Stadium and was recently crowned the Championship Player of the Year at the annual Football League awards ceremony. Blues boss Jose Mourinho is planning to take another look at Bamford in pre-season before assessing whether he is ready to become part of his first-team squad at Stamford Bridge. Bamford has made no secret of his ambition to make a senior breakthrough in west London, but with Diego Costa, Loic Remy and probably Didier Drogba all set to still be there, competition for places will be fierce next term. If Chelsea refuse to cash-in on the player then Ronald Koeman is open to the idea of taking Bamford on loan at St Mary's, but is likely to face serious competition for his signature.
