Arsenal hero Charlie Nicholas believes Manchester United should attempt to sign Real Madrid star Gareth Bale this summer.
As reported by Sky Sports, the pundit claims that the Red Devils must make a statement and land the Welsh wizard in the summer transfer window as they look ahead to the 2015/16 campaign.
And Nicholas believes that Bale would be open to a Premier League return and would be the main man at the Theatre of Dreams.
He stated: “If you want to make a serious statement, then you need to throw everything at getting Gareth Bale.
“He’s the sort of player that can create a massive excitement and help United make an immediate impact when they return to the Champions League.
“I think Bale would be open to returning to the Premier League, even if he wouldn’t say it.
“United can say to him, ‘you’ve been successful in Spain winning the Champions League but after your ups and downs, you can come here and be our Ronaldo, rather than playing second fiddle’."
Sell Di Maria
As well as signing Bale, the ex-Arsenal man has insisted that United should offload Argentine international Angel di Maria, despite only signing him last summer.
Nicholas doesn't think the midfielder, who has endured a tricky debut campaign at the club, is committed to the club and should move on sooner rather than later.
He continued by saying: “They need to offload [Angel] Di Maria, who came in and offered a lot of energy but now doesn’t seem totally committed like he did at Real Madrid.”
Stick or twist?
Ultimately, unlike Di Maria, Bale has been there and done it before in England's elite division, so it's not entirely surprising that Nicholas thinks the Red Devils should sign the Welshman, while offloading Di Maria.
Ok, the Argentine international, who arrived from the Bernabeu in a club-record deal this past summer, has endured a season to forget at the Theatre of Dreams, but it may be slightly too early to give up on him just yet.
Of course, if available - and if there are enough funds - Van Gaal should target Bale in the summer. If United manage to get Di Maria firing again, with Bale on the opposite flank and Spanish international Juan Mata playing off Wayne Rooney, the Red Devils would possess a formidable attacking force. That, of course, is the dream scenario for the Old Trafford faithful.
