It was the one night of the year when WWE goes extreme, but last night will be remembered as one of the biggest shocks of the year.
Cesaro and Tyson Kidd have rejuvenated the tag team division since they defeated The Usos to win the gold at Fastlane back in February and it looked like the two former singles competitors were about to go on a long run with the championships.
The Lucha Dragons had been their main competition for the past few weeks, after The New Day seemed to have failed to connect with the audience and "New Day Sucks" chants followed them wherever they went.
But last week on Raw The New Day used some cheat tactics to ensure they became the number one contenders to the tag team titles after Xavier Woods stopped Sin Cara from climbing back into the ring. The New Day handed the win via count-out.
This made The New Day look weak, but, to optimists, Cesaro and Kidd retaining was the safe bet. That was until the numbers game began to take effect. Xavier once again caused the distraction before Natalya slapped the taste out of his mouth.
Kidd kicked Woods down before Big E knocked him off the apron and Cesaro whipped him out of the ring, but the distraction allowed Kofi Kingston to roll up Cesaro with a handful of tights that gave the stable their first ever piece of gold since they formed.
Going forward, it is noted that the Freebird rule was mentioned for use if The New Day ever won the tag straps, although Woods hasn't seen a lot of ring action lately, so it could just be Kofi and Big E that defend their newly won championships.
It's hard to see how Cesaro and Kidd will capitalize on the loss, but the two have already taken to Twitter to state that the comeback starts now and "The Best Team Ever" want their tag team championships back.
Payback is now just three weeks away and Cesaro and Kidd will be hoping to cash in on a rematch whilst The Lucha Dragons will also be hoping to put their name down for a shot at the new champions. Could this be WWE's way of making the Tag Division exciting again?
