The WWE has had to cope with increased scrutiny of its Superstars and storylines in recent years as the internet wrestling community has grown and grown.
Quick-fire criticism, in-depth analysis and the blurred lines of keyfabe have all become common place as the WWE has expanded out of the ring and onto the web. The WWE's decision to launch their own Network a sign that they are buying into the future.
It hasn't been all positive though. A point one Superstar was keen to make when he unleashed a long rant against the "internet fans" in particular and their role in modern WWE.
Speaking on The Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast recently, The Miz took no prisoners when he was asked about the role internet fans have played in getting behind rising stars of the organization only to forget about them soon after - a fate he believes awaits Damien Sandow:
"They did this...I know exactly what's going to happen because I have seen it before. Do you remember Alex Riley? Everyone told him to turn on me...he did exactly what they wanted. Three months later he was fighting to get on TV and the crowd couldn't care less about him."
The Miz has seen a lot of former allies and sparring partners break from their feud to try and make it as a legitimate Superstar in their own right only to see it backfire. And his out of character rant shows just how passionate the wrestler is about the cutthroat nature of the business.
"The problem is (the WWE fans) think they know everything," continued The Miz.
"I did everything I could to make(Damien Sandow) succeed…now it’s up to the WWE Universe. It’s up to them. And I don’t know what’s going to happen. Because they do it all the time to all these WWE superstars.”
Mizdow to Sandow
The rant comes in the wake of Damien Sandow appearing to break free from the Mizdow character and branch out on his own on last night's Raw.
Indeed the wrestler effectively proved The Miz's point that it was the WWE fans who allowed the change to happen in the first place.
It remains to be seen whether he can build on the rapport he currently has with the WWE Universe. You just know though that, if the WWE community (both online and at the arena) begin to withdraw their support, The Miz will be the first to say he told you so.
