After yet another Barcelona masterclass against Getafe, many people are speculating as to whether Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez are the best-ever attacking threesome.
Certainly on current form it's hard to argue that anyone even comes close to them, and that includes Real Madrid's lauded "BBC" combination. If the first half of the season belonged to Real and Cristiano, Bale and Benzema, then since the turn of the year the mantle has been pulled from under their feet and ended up at Camp Nou.
It's far too early to judge as to whether they are the best ever though. We can go back as far as the 1960's to Real's Di Stefano, Gento and Puskas. That was a trio to rival any other and a debate would certainly have to include them.
102 and counting
Milan's Van Basten, Rijkaard and Gullit should also get an honourable mention, even if Ruud Gullit wasn't a striker by definition. There have been many, many others too throughout the course of footballing history, far too many to list here.
But has there ever been a trident that have all been at the very top of their game, at the same time. With 102 goals so far this season, conceivably "MSN" could go on and break the European record of 115 goals set by Ronaldo, Benzema and Higuain for Real Madrid in 2012. But even that three weren't all on song week in and week out.
Can't play together
Johan Cruyff was one of many that said that there was absolutely no way this particular set of players could play together in the same club side to any successful degree. That all three were far too individual and egotistical.
Well for once, the always-vocal Cruyff will have to eat a great big dollop of humble pie because not only can they play together but they are ripping it up in La Liga and Europe this season. It will be one of football's great injustices if Barca walk away from this season trophyless, because these three giants of the modern game deserve for their prowess to be acknowledged.
With four league games to go Barca remain in the box seat but still need to win all of their games whilst Real Madrid sit just two points behind them.
Cordoba next up
Los Blancos know that just one slip up for the Catalans will give them the opportunity to leapfrog their greatest rival and pip them to the post in La Liga. Bottom of the table Cordoba are next in the firing line for Barca and they should already be running scared. In this form, MSN are quite capable of getting double figures on their own.
Even if we forget goals just for a minute, the sheer amount of assists between the three deserves further scrutiny. They are simply re-writing the rule book each and every week. Whether that will translate into a season that places them amongst the best to have every played the game, we'll see in a few weeks.
