Manchester United are in talks with the representatives of Phil Jones over a new deal for the defender, and the man himself is confident a positive outcome can be found soon.
That’s according to information in The Guardian, where it’s claimed that Jones could follow fellow centre-back Chris Smalling with regards to tying his future to Old Trafford until at least 2019. Jones’ current deal is set to expire next summer, which could potentially raise question marks over his importance in the squad if the matter is left unresolved come the start of next season.
New Jones deal
However that scenario is wholly unlikely, with it being implied that United are keen to have him playing for them for the foreseeable future.

Although currently out injured, Jones has been an important part of Louis van Gaal’s defensive unit this term, and the obvious hope would be that he and Smalling can forge some sort of successful partnership moving forward.
Tipped for big things since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson, the former Blackburn Rovers man has yet to fulfil his potential, although penning a new long-term deal would banish any pressure that might be effecting performances to a degree.

Like Smalling, who signed his latest contract with United last month, Jones’ age and versatility makes him a useful option for Van Gaal moving forward, but even so the addition of a more experienced head will surely still be sought in the next transfer window.
The common thread details that Mats Hummels is the man the Red Devils are most keen on, with the German World Cup winner having been a primary target for the past two years. Jurgen Klopp’s reign at the Signal Iduna Park will reach its climax this summer, making a deal for Hummels more feasible than ever, and if he can be tempted to the Premier League he would make for a fine purchase.
End for Evans?
In the event that he did arrive it might mean that Smalling is pushed out to the right-back position, unless of course Van Gaal decides to use three at the back, as he has done before. In any event Hummels’ transfer would surely spell the end of the line for Jonny Evans’ Old Trafford life.
The Northern Irishman has struggled to impress this season, and moving further down the pecking order wouldn’t bode well at this point in his career.
