Over the last few months we have seen some tension between Rusev and Lana and things worsened when Rusev lost his United States Championship to John Cena at WrestleMania 31.
Lana has gained immense popularity during her time on the main roster and is often credited with the success of the duo.
The amount of heat she manages to gain every single night, the WWE have obviously noticed the fans’ reactions to Lana and they reportedly have some big plans for her.
The rumoured plan is not simply to turn face but to receive a push as well as she has the fan support behind her. The reports suggest that the two will be breaking up on television and using it as a long-term plan to turn her into one of the most popular divas in the WWE - even though her wrestling ability is unknown.
Dave Meltzer provided his input also, suggesting that Lana could even be the female face of the company, that’s how much faith the WWE are reportedly putting into the Ravishing Russian.
The reports suggest that Vince McMahon wants Lana to eventually break-up with Rusev and reveal that she is really American, this ‘stunning’ revelation will be used to ensure her transition from the Russian manager of Rusev goes ahead without any problems.
She could keep the name Lana but the WWE could want her to use the name CJ, which will play off her real name, Catherine Joy Perry. The reason the WWE might decide to switch to CJ is because it would make her similar to Pamela Anderson’s portrayal of CJ Parker in Baywatch.
This will be a bold move from the WWE if they do decide to throw her in the deep end right away. It’s no secret that she’s done a fantastic job since pairing with Rusev and we all knew that this act wasn’t always going to last, so the WWE might have had this in the back of their mind. But seeing the reaction and hearing it on a weekly basis probably made the decision a little easier for them.
There was a lot of backlash last week when there were reports that Eva Marie was being considered as a diva who would receive a heavy push to the top but based on Meltzer’s comments it seems as if they will put more faith into Lana.
We don’t know whether she can wrestle or whether she plans to train, if she can’t then the WWE will have plans to keep her on television and allow her to train and improve.
She does have a lot of experience in entertainment and will be a very marketable diva compared to other divas on the main roster. She’s someone who would be involved in the media side of things for the WWE considering she has done modelling, she’s been in films, television shows - she has a dance background and has even been in a band so she does have experience under the spotlight.
There are certainly an interesting couple of months ahead for Rusev and Lana. The tension is continuing to build and we know it will reach a boiling point soon, unless plans are changed again. It will also be interesting to see what they do with Lana and how she deals with the pressure as well as what direction they take Rusev, considering he has had a lot of success so far and Lana has played a key role in his progress.
