Manchester United have confirmed that highly rated youngster Andreas Pereira has agreed a new three-year contract.
They 19-year-old has signed a deal through to the summer of 2018, with an option to stay for another season. Pereira, a gifted midfielder, has been on the bench in recent weeks for Louis van Gaal, and is expected to impact the first-team next season.
He made his debut earlier this season in the League Cup having joined Manchester United’s academy in 2011 from PSV Eindhoven, and came off the bench against Tottenham in the Premier League.
The Belgian-born Brazilian youth international has been heavily linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs in recent months, and there was a real fear among Manchester United fans that the club would repeat the mistake of Paul Pogba.
At the time, Sir Alex Ferguson let Pogba leave on a free transfer despite being one of the club’s best young players because the Frenchman reportedly became unhappy with a lack of playing time.
But van Gaal has moved quickly to tie Pereira down to a long-term contract, and the Dutchman admitted that he is extremely pleased the midfielder has decided to stay at Old Trafford.
Speaking to www.manutd.com, van Gaal said: "I am delighted that Andreas has signed a new contract. Andreas has all the attributes to become an integral part of the first team; great natural talent coupled with a good appetite to learn.
"I am pleased with his progression so far this season and look forward to working with him to develop his talent even further.”
Happy with development
As for Pereira, he said all the right things about progressing into the Manchester United first-team.
Also speaking to www.manutd.com, he said: "I am pleased to have signed my new contract. I would like to thank the manager for giving me the opportunity to join the first-team squad. I made my Premier League debut against Tottenham Hotspur and to play at Old Trafford in front of so many fans was a dream come true.
"I am at the right club to continue my development as a player and to learn as much as I can. I want to thank my family and God for the opportunity he has given me.”
