Louis van Gaal has admitted that Manchester United’s lack of goals in recent games is concerning him, revealing that he misses having a striker who scores regularly.
The Red Devils lost 1-0 at home to West Brom on Saturday, recording their third straight defeat and third outing in a row in which they’ve failed to score. The result at Old Trafford came after a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Everton and a 1-0 loss to newly-crowned Premier League champions Chelsea.
Worst of all though the result allowed Liverpool to gain ground in their bid to beat United to a top four place, and Van Gaal has conceded that if things aren’t turned around during their next fixture - against Crystal Palace - his side may give up the Champions League spot they’ve worked all season to cement.
Van Gaal criticisms
"I miss a striker that scores and every striker - if it's Van Persie or Falcao or Wayne Rooney - who scores the goal, I'm very happy and the team is very happy," Van Gaal said, according to Goal.
"[The lack of goals] is a concern now because it's not a coincidence and, in spite of the way we have played against Chelsea, Everton and now against West Brom, we have created a lot of chances and still we don't score.
"So you can say, as manager, we were not unlucky in every match. It's also that you have to finish these chances.
"We have lost three times in a row so it's also in the hands of my players. [The top four] is less secure."
So far this term United’s frontmen have paled in comparison to those of the teams they’re trying to compete with. Chelsea’s Diego Costa has 19 goals to his name, Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero has 22, Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has 14 and even Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane has 20 in his tally.
Meanwhile Wayne Rooney is United’s most potent forward, and the sum of his efforts in front of goal only amounts to 12, just three more than Costa had managed in his first seven Premier League games this term.
