Borussia Dortmund's sporting director Michael Zorc has confirmed that the club’s midfield star Ilkay Gundogan has asked to leave this summer, but that the intention is to retain the services of Mats Hummels.
The German pair, both wanted by Manchester United, have been heavily linked with leaving the Signal Iduna Park this summer after it was made clear that Jurgen Klopp would not remain at the helm for next season, and now Zorc has admitted that Gundogan has issued a formal request to be able to find a new club.
That opens the door for United to attempt to make a deal, with Gundogan perhaps the ideal candidate to replace Michael Carrick in the long run. As for Hummels though Louis van Gaal is sure to have a far harder task.

"Ilkay told us he wants to leave this summer," Zorc said, as relayed by the Manchester Evening News.
"But we have received no offers from any clubs for any of our players as of now.

"Every player always has to make decisions on their future but, for us, the intention is clear to keep Mats."
Of course United aren’t alone with regards to their interest in Gundogan, whose deal with Dortmund is due to expire next summer. Reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have been touted as suitors as well, as have Arsenal, and so it could come down to who is prepared to offer him the most lucrative package.
With that in mind United might have the best shot given the fact that their financial status is set to be significantly boosted by the new kit sponsorship deal with Adidas which is due to come into effect this summer.
Bayern, rich as they are in terms of talent, might not be able to compete to such monetary extremes, whilst Arsene Wenger might be reluctant to blow most of his budget securing one player.
United fans though might prefer that Van Gaal turns his attention to addressing other issues in the squad, with the acquisition of a top quality centre-half, coincidentally like Hummels, sure to rank as paramount importance.
Manchester United fans, do you think the Gundogan deal should be prioritised, or are there other areas of the squad that need improving first? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below.
