Sami Zayn takes John Cena's US Title open challenge

Published 2 Comments

John Cena's United States Championship open challenge has already presented us with some great matches and opportunities for several stars on the roster.

We have seen Heath Slater stopped from taking the challenge twice, Dean Ambrose take Cena all the way and the only person who hasn't shown up is the number one contender Rusev.

Rusev and Cena have faced off at the last three PPVs and will go head to head one final time at Payback in an I Quit match for the US championship.

Despite his monthly scheduled battles with Rusev, Cena has put the title on the line on a weekly basis ever since winning it at WrestleMania XXXI.

However when RAW came to Montreal, Canada tonight, his challenger was definitely someone that no-one would have expected.

Once Cena opened the challenge, the crowd erupted to the sound of WWE legend and Montreal native Bret Hart coming down to the ring.

Hart introduced the challenger - after taking out Heath Slater in one fell swoop, the #1 contender for the NXT Championship, Sami Zayn.

Zayn is set to challenge Kevin Owens for the title at NXT Takeover but first he took on Cena in his native city.

Zayn got a great reception and gave the champion a very good match where he showcased his abilities on RAW for the first time.

Despite hurting his shoulder and receiving some quick medical attention, Zayn finished the match and had Cena on the ropes for a lot of it.

Cena got the win eventually and made a great showing of respect by raising Zayn's arm and leaving him to receive the admiration of the Montreal crowd.

NXT Championship or bust?

Rumours have been rife for a long time now that the WWE want NXT Champion Kevin Owens to have a long spell with the title but a title rematch against Zayn is the perfect place for him to lose it.

Zayn is the former champion and is certainly the key man to take the title off of Owens who has successfully defended it against Finn Balor.

If Zayn doesn't win the title at Takeover however, could his next move be to the main roster after his debut on RAW tonight?
