Manchester United have sounded out Hugo Lloris over a potential move to Old Trafford this summer, according to L'Equipe.
Louis van Gaal looks set to lose David de Gea in the near future as the Spanish goalkeeper is refusing to extend his contract with the club.
As he has just 12 months remaining and with Real Madrid circling the Theatre of Dreams like a hungry vulture, Manchester United have a huge decision to make.
They could cash in on De Gea, generating a decent lump of cash to reinvest in the squad or they could force him to see out the remainder of his contract and hope he has a change of heart before it expires.
It seems they are preparing to take the first option and have already decided Lloris will be the perfect replacement. The report in France's leading sport newspaper has suggested that there have already been quiet discussions between the player and the club.
The asking price
However, Tottenham are not in a position where they need to sell. Daniel Levy, the notorious chairman at White Hart Lane, will resist any attempt Manchester United make to prize their goalkeeper away from north London.
As always though, the savvy businessman knows the value of money and is reportedly willing to accept an offer in the region of £40m.
That will be enough to break the £32.6m record set by Juventus when they bought Gianluigi Buffon from Parma in 2001.
The Champions League dream
Manchester United certainly have the money to meet Tottenham's valuation, but will try their best to push down that price.
Lloris could also help the situation by handing in a transfer request, although it is not known how discontent, if at all, the France international is in north London.
It is well known that he would like to play Champions League football and, once again, Tottenham have failed to reach the top four in the Premier League.
Lloris is a top goalkeeper and is widely considered one of the best in the English game. Ironically, the only goalkeeper currently ranked above him is De Gea.
Should Manchester United qualify, they might have the pulling power to bring Lloris to the club.
