Looking into the crystal ball two months ago, Aston Villa fans must have all but conceded that they would be facing local rivals Birmingham in joining them in the Championship following a poor run of form under Paul Lambert.
Strangely enough it was via social media site Twitter that chairman Randy Lerner announced that it was to be “Lambert out and Sherwood in”.
Since Sherwood took over at Aston Villa, his team has won six, lost five and drawn the other. He has also taken the Villains into the FA Cup final for the first time since the turn of the millennium as well as moving the Midlands side up the Premier league.
Whether it was the players' lack of faith and trust with the manager, or whether the tactics employed by Paul Lambert just weren’t up for scratch, remains to be seen. But as soon as Sherwood took charge it seemed like something had changed with the same team, something magical.
The talent of Jack Grealish has really blossomed and he looks like a potential future star for club and country, whether he choose Ireland or England, either national team have certainly got a gem there.
The prolific Christian Benteke seems to have overcome plenty of injury problems just in time to save the Villains from relegation from the top flight, while the fight and determination that Sherwood brings has been shown already in the FA cup semi-final surprise victory over Liverpool.
How much money will be given to Sherwood should he keep them in the top flight remains to be seen, but Lerner will certainly have higher expectations for next season following the recent form under the new manager.
