Liverpool hero Dietmar Hamann believes Everton star James McCarthy could be the perfect man to replace Steven Gerrard at Anfield.
As reported by the Mirror, Hamann, who enjoyed a fine stint on Merseyside throughout his playing days, has insisted that he's always been a big fan of the Everton man, claiming that the the Republic of Ireland international has enjoyed a fine season at Goodison Park.
Of course, with Gerrard nearing the end of his playing days on English soil, his possible replacement has been the subject of much debate over recent months, but Hamann, though, clearly doesn't think Liverpool need to look too far.
Hailed by Hamann
When speaking about the Everton man, the former German international told the Irish Independent: "I've always been a big fan of McCarthy's. I think he's done ever so well this season.
"Whether he's a player Liverpool are interested in him remains but to be seen but in the centre midfield ares - Joe Allen, Henderson, there's a few players there.
"Somebody has to step up and perform at the highest every single week because obviously that's what will be missing with Steven Gerrard gone."
Interest in McCarthy
It's far from uncertain as to whether Liverpool would attempt to bring the dynamic midfielder to the club before the start of the 2015/16 campaign, but there certainly appears to be a number of admirers in the player's services.
In fact, according to the same report from the Mirror, Liverpool's Premier League rivals Manchester City and Tottenham both have an interest in the player, but it remains to be seen as to whether they will press ahead with moves in the near future.
It's not realistic
It's pretty obvious, isn't it: it's going to be incredibly difficult for the Liverpool hierarchy to bring McCarthy to Anfield in the upcoming transfer window.
One thing's for sure, after some fine performances throughout the coruse of the campaign, the player is in high-demand, so it won't be easy for Roberto Martinez and Co. to keep hold of him.
There's no doubt about it, after a season of disappointment at Goodison Park, it's crucial the club keep hold of McCarthy, who has the potential to lead the side from the middle of the park for many years to come.
